Padang State University (UNP) is the result of the conversion of IKIP Padang into a university, which was originally called the Teacher Education College (PTPG) in Batusangkar. Since it was founded on September 1st. 1954, UNP has undergone many changes. In the history of its development, the changes that have occurred include not only its name and place of office, but also its status and the educational programs it has developed, in accordance with policies to meet the demands of educational development in the country. These changes can be classified into five periods, viz.

1. PTPG Batusangkar Period (1954‑1956)
2. FKIP Andalas University Bukittinggi period in Batusangkar (1956‑1958)
3. FKIP Period Andalas University Padang (1958‑1964)
4. Period of IKIP Jakarta Padang Branch (1964‑1965)
5. Period of IKIP Padang, an independent institution (1965-1999)
6. Padang State University Period (1999 – present)

Motto: The motto of Padang State University is Alam Takambang Jadi Guru (Nature Develops Becomes Teacher)
